Asymmetrical Meters
Meters that cannot be divided into equal groups of two, three, or four beats.
Introduction to Asymmetry
Unlike simple or compound meters, Asymmetrical Meters (also called Irregular or Complex meters) have an odd number of subdivisions that create an uneven pulse.
The top number is usually 5 or 7. The bottom number indicates the beat unit (4, 8, or 16), but the feel is defined by the uneven grouping.
