Hemiola

Explore how meter grouping changes the feel of the same 6 pulses.

What is a Hemiola?

It is a device that creates the illusion of shifting meters: where two groups of three beats were heard, three groups of two are heard instead, with the pulse never changing speed. Hence the 3:2 ratio — three groups where there were two.

Standard Grouping (3/4): Two groups of three beats (Accents on beats 1 and 4)

Hemiola Grouping (3/4): Three groups of two beats (Accents on beats 1, 3 and 5)

Interact: Change the grouping of the 6 beats
