Music Notation: The Language of Music
Understanding how musical ideas are written and communicated.
Key Concepts
Musical notation represents a highly structured system that goes beyond ordinary text. Through specialized symbols, composers and musicians can capture three essential sound characteristics: pitch and duration are precisely specified, while relative intensity is suggested through various markings. What makes this system powerful is that pitch and duration information appear together in a single visual representation.
Representing Pitch
Pitch refers to how high or low a sound appears to our ears, which corresponds directly to its frequency. Within the notation system, we mark pitches using symbols placed on a staff, and each position corresponds to a specific letter name.
The Staff
The staff (also called a stave) is the foundation of written music, made up of five parallel horizontal lines with equal spacing between them.
Letter Names
Musicians use the first seven letters of the alphabet (A B C D E F G) to name different pitches. This naming convention matches the pattern found on piano keyboards, where these letters repeat across multiple octaves.
The Clefs
A clef serves as a reference point at the start of each musical line. This symbol determines which letter names correspond to each line and space on the staff, allowing musicians to read notes accurately.

Octave Identification
Because music spans a wide range of pitches, we use octave numbers to distinguish notes with the same letter name. Middle C receives the designation C4. This numbering approach, endorsed by the International Acoustical Society, assigns octave numbers from A0 (the lowest note on a standard piano) up to C8 (the highest).
The symbol 8va (short for ottava alta) placed above a passage means the notes should sound one octave higher than written. Copyists often use this device when too many ledger lines would make the notation hard to read. A related marking, 8va bassa (sometimes abbreviated 8vb), appears below the staff to indicate that the notes sound an octave lower than written.
