Triad Positions and Inversions
Learn how changing the bass note shifts a chord's gravitational center without altering its harmonic identity.
The Three Postures of a Triad
Any triad contains three notes (root, third, fifth). Which note is placed in the lowest voice (the bass) dictates its posture: Root Position (root in bass), First Inversion (third in bass), and Second Inversion (fifth in bass).
Bass Voice Leading & Gravitational Flexibility
Inversions preserve a chord's pitch set while radically transforming its acoustic center of gravity. Shifting the bass line allows composers to craft smooth, melodic basslines while sculpting subtle nuances of harmonic stability.
