Triad Stability & Tension
Learn to differentiate between consonant stability and dissonant instability in harmonic flow.
The Spectrum of Stability
The four fundamental triads split into two families based on acoustic equilibrium. Major and Minor Triads feature an unaltered Perfect 5th and are stable (points of rest). Diminished and Augmented Triads contain altered fifths and are unstable (points of tension and movement).
The Rhythmic Pulse of Tension & Release
Music is the art of governing tension over time. Stable triads (major/minor) offer sanctuary and calm, while unstable triads (diminished/augmented) act as the dramatic engines propelling your narrative forward.
