Modal Scales (Church Modes)

Expressive colors and soundscapes built from any parent major scale.

What are Modes?

Before modern major and minor keys existed, music was built on modes. You can explore them by playing a major scale but starting on different notes or transposing their formula to any root.

The 7 Modern Modes

Ionian (Major), Dorian (Minor with raised 6th), Phrygian (Minor with flat 2nd), Lydian (Major with raised 4th), Mixolydian (Major with flat 7th), Aeolian (Natural Minor), and Locrian (Diminished with flat 5th).

Parent Scale Concept

All 7 modes are 'relative' to a parent Major scale. D Dorian shares the same notes as C Major, but A Dorian comes from G Major, and G Dorian from F Major: every major scale generates all 7 modes.
