Exotic Scales

A journey through diverse musical cultures: India, Japan, and the Middle East.

While Western music often relies on Major and Minor scales, other cultures have developed unique tuning systems and scales that express different emotional landscapes. Let's explore three famous examples.

India: Raga Todi

In Northern Indian Classical music, Thaats act as parent scales for Ragas. Raga Todi uses a flat 2nd, flat 3rd, sharp 4th, and flat 6th, creating a somber, devotional, and intense mood.

Japan: Hirajoshi

The Hirajoshi scale is a pentatonic scale used in Japanese koto music. Unlike the Western Major Pentatonic (which avoids half steps), Hirajoshi embraces them, creating a contemplative, mystical sound.

1 - 2 - b3 - 5 - b6

Middle East: Byzantine (Double Harmonic)

Often called the "Arabic Scale," the Double Harmonic Major is unique because it contains very large jumps of three half steps between consecutive notes. These wide gaps give it an instantly recognizable, exotic flavor.
