Tonality (Key)

The gravitational force of music.

The Magnetic Center

Tonality is the system where music is organized around a central tone called the Tonic. All other notes feel a gravitational pull towards this 'Home' note.

Establishing a Key

A key is established by using the specific notes of a scale and repeatedly resolving tension back to the Tonic. This tells the listener's ear where 'home' is.

Major vs Minor Tonality

The feeling of the key depends on the 3rd degree. A Major 3rd creates a Major tonality (brighter), while a Minor 3rd creates a Minor tonality (darker).

Scale Degree Names & Tonal Roles

Each degree of the scale has a specific name and function that defines its level of tension or stability within the key. Select a degree to hear it and learn its role:

Resolution & Tonal Gravity

Listen to how melodic tension dissolves when resolving to the tonic. Select different options below to experience their gravitational pull.

Leading Tone to Tonic (VII → I)

The leading tone (B) rises a half-step to rest on the tonic (C). This is the strongest pull of resolution in tonal music.

Dominant to Tonic (V → I)

The dominant (G) jumps down a perfect 5th to affirm the stability of the tonic (C).

Composition Insight

Tonality provides the gravitational structure that makes music feel purposeful. It gives your compositions a sense of departure and return, tension and release. Mastering tonal centers allows you to guide your listener's emotional journey with precision and intention.
