Parallel Scale Relationships
Same home, different furniture.
Parallel Definition
Parallel scales share the same Tonic (starting note) but have different key signatures. For example, C Major and C Minor are parallel keys.
Comparing the Notes
Parallel keys differ primarily by the 3rd, 6th, and 7th degrees. In C Minor, these notes are flattened (Eb, Ab, Bb) compared to C Major. By switching between them, you can clearly see and hear how the mood shifts instantly.
Composition Insight
Parallel keys (C Major/C Minor) share a tonic but differ in emotional character. Switching between them mid-composition creates dramatic mood shifts while maintaining a sense of home. This technique is powerful for adding emotional depth and contrast without losing your tonal center.
