The Circle of Fifths
The master map of musical keys.
Clockwise: Sharps
Moving clockwise from C Major (top), every step is 5 notes up in the scale (for example, C - D - E - F - G, which is the 5th note). This is why it's called the Circle of Fifths. Each step adds one Sharp to the key signature.
Counter-Clockwise: Flats
Moving counter-clockwise from C, every step is 5 notes down (or 4 notes up). C - F - Bb - Eb - Ab... Each step adds one Flat to the key signature.
Distance and Relationship
Scales that are close to each other on the circle (like C and G) share most of the same notes and are 'closely related'. Scales opposite each other (like C and F#) share very few notes.
Composition Insight
The circle is your map for understanding the relationships between scales. Memorizing it allows you to predict key signatures instantly and understand which scale changes will feel smooth (adjacent scales) versus dramatic (distant scales). Use this map to craft compelling journeys in your compositions.
